STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS REPORT AUGUST 2026

Greetings to the Membership,

I am sure everyone has been fully engaged this summer with the hot, humid weather we have experienced. It has certainly been quite the HEAT wave (pun intended).

What a tremendous turnout we had at the HEAT Classic Golf Tournament at Rossmere Golf & Country Club in early July. On behalf of our Association, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the participants, our generous sponsors, and the many members of our staff and executive who worked so hard to make this event another outstanding success. The tournament continues to establish itself as one of the premier golf events of the year, and that is a direct reflection of the commitment and support of everyone involved. Thank you!

In other news, there have been some changes within the City of Winnipeg department that our Association works with most frequently. I would like to let everyone know that Michael Cantor has accepted a new position with the City, effective July 27, moving into Fleet Management. We congratulate Michael on his new role and sincerely thank him for the collaborative relationship he fostered with HEAT over the years. His professionalism and willingness to work with our Association have been greatly appreciated.

We are also pleased to welcome Mike Smoljanovic as the new Manager of Streets Maintenance. Mike has built a strong working relationship with HEAT over many years and brings extensive operational knowledge of both the City’s requirements and the capabilities of our membership. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnership and working together to ensure the delivery of best-value services and operational excellence for the citizens of Winnipeg.

Another important update involves the City’s upcoming winter equipment tender. We have been advised that the city is hoping to release the winter tender during the first week of August. Rather than using the previous W1 category for miscellaneous equipment, the city intends to utilize HEAT’s Specialty Equipment Listing to source equipment requiring competitive pricing. This represents another positive step in recognizing the value of our Association as a trusted resource. We will be reviewing and updating the Specialty Equipment Listing and encourage all members to ensure their information is current. We are open to adding additional categories as necessary. Thank you to everyone who has already provided input.

There is also a great deal happening on the municipal political front as Winnipeg prepares for the civic election on October 28, 2026. We expect to see significant changes around the Council table, with Councillors Janice Lukes, Brian Mayes, Marcus Chambers, John Orlikow, and Sherry Rollins having announced they will not be seeking re-election. As new members of Council are elected, it will be more important than ever for HEAT to establish strong working relationships with our city’s decision-makers.

The work performed by our members cannot be overstated. Every day, your equipment, operators, and workforce help keep Winnipeg operating safely and efficiently—24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Whether supporting snow and ice control, road maintenance, infrastructure projects, or emergency response, our industry plays a vital role in maintaining essential municipal services. As we have always done, this association will continue to advocate on behalf of our members and ensure that our expertise, operational experience, and industry knowledge are clearly communicated to the Mayor, City Council, and senior administration.

Finally, if you have not already registered, I encourage you to sign up for our Annual Fall 9-Hole Golf Tournament, Mardi Gras on the Green, at Bel Acres Golf & Country Club. It is always a fantastic afternoon of golf, networking, and fellowship. The 9-hole format makes for an enjoyable and efficient event, while our sponsors once again have some excellent prizes and interactive sponsor holes planned throughout the course. We hope to see you there.

Thank you for your continued support of HEAT. Have a safe and successful remainder of the summer, and we look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events.

Regards,

Bruce Henley, Stakeholder Relations Manager

Join us for a fun filled, Mardi Gras themed 9-hole tournament at the beautiful Bel Acres Golf Course, just outside the city limits. Great food and drinks, lots of prizes and great company is sure to be found as we transport you to New Orleans for the day.

Grab some customers, your boss or some friends you haven’t connected with in a while and get out of the office or off the job site while we still have nice weather for an amazing day on the course.

Not a golfer? No problem. We still have a couple of great sponsorship opportunities available for you to be part of the fun. If sitting in the shade under a tent while you network is more your style then reach out to Shannon at memberservices@heatmb.ca to see what sponsorships are still available.
