Insights from Councillor Janice Lukes

I want to extend my sincere thanks to all HEAT members for the tremendous work you do and the important service you provide to the City of Winnipeg.

As many of you may know, there will be significant changes at City Council over the next four years, with five Councillors, including myself, retiring from public service.

When I was first elected, I was not fully aware of the work performed by HEAT. Throughout my time on Council, I have greatly valued the opportunity to speak with HEAT members, attend your conferences, and learn firsthand about the challenges and realities facing your industry. Your willingness to share your experience and expertise helped me better understand the issues before us and, in many cases, helped inform decisions and to move important changes forward.

The contribution of HEAT members to Winnipeg cannot be overstated. Every day, your staff, equipment and expertise help keep our city moving, safe, and functioning—around the clock and throughout the year. From snow and ice operations and road maintenance to major infrastructure work and emergency response, the work you do is an essential part of delivering the services Winnipeg residents rely on.

As a new Council takes shape, I would strongly encourage HEAT to continue building those relationships and sharing your knowledge with elected officials and senior administration. In particular, I believe an educational session for the incoming Public Works Committee would be extremely valuable. Giving new Councillors the opportunity to better understand your operations, the challenges you face, and the role your industry plays in Winnipeg would help set the foundation for productive relationships over the next four years.

Thank you again for the conversations, the education, and the work you do every day for our city. It has been a pleasure working with you, and I wish HEAT and all of its members continued success as you help move Winnipeg forward.

Kind Regards,

Councillor Janice Lukes

Mardi Gras on the Green – Only a few spots left!

We still have limited spots available for our fun filled, Mardi Gras themed, 9-hole tournament at the beautiful Bel Acres Golf Course, on Wednesday, September 9th. Great food and drinks, lots of prizes and great company is sure to be found as we transport you to New Orleans for the day. Some of the exciting things we have planned are a “Big Easy with Tzatziki” lunch, a “Sip then Rip” hole, and a “Beer Break on the Bayou”. You’ll have to join us to see what other fun is in store.

Grab some customers, your boss or some friends you haven’t connected with in a while and get out of the office or off the job site while we still have nice weather for an amazing day on the course.
