Stakeholder Relations Update – May 7, 2024

Greetings to the Membership,

It’s great to see so many of our members back on the streets as part of the annual spring cleanup operations – your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

Since our last update, we’ve seen a significant shift on the political front. Canada now has a new Liberal minority government, while the NDP has lost several seats along with its official party status. Does this signal a move toward a two-party system in Canadian politics? Time will tell. Let’s hope that all parties, regardless of alignment, work together in this session for the greater good of all Canadians.

On a more local and encouraging note – Bill 38 continues to move forward! This important legislative initiative, which will see amendments to the Highway Traffic Act regarding regulations for traffic driving near cyclists, snow removal equipment & tow trucks has been encouraged and supported for several years by HEAT, is now nearing the finish line. In April, the proposed amendments passed the committee stage with strong backing from various stakeholders, including CAA. We also presented in support of the bill – please see the attached transcript for full details.

The next step is for the bill to return to the legislature for final approval. With a bit of luck, we’re hopeful it will receive the required signatures for Royal Assent. We are also working on an educational information package to ensure that all Manitobans understand the new legislation once it becomes law.

We’ll keep you informed as developments unfold. Please take a moment to click the button below and review the transcript of support.

Take care,

Bruce Henley, Manager, Stakeholder Relations
