MOTOR CARRIER ENFORCEMENT SAFETY CORNER

The Minutes That Can Save You Thousands
Every driver has heard it before: “Do your trip inspection.” For some, it’s become just another box to check before getting on the road. But the truth is that a proper trip inspection is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself, your equipment, your company, and everyone sharing the road with you.
A Trip Inspection Is Your First Line of Defence
When a Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement officer conducts a CVSA Level II inspection, the inspection focuses on the driver and a walk-around examination of the vehicle. The officer is looking for many of the same defects you should be checking before you ever leave the yard.
Think about that for a moment. Your trip inspection is essentially your opportunity to find the problems (and get them fixed) before an enforcement officer finds them.
A good inspection helps identify issues such as:
- Worn or damaged tires
- Brake defects
- Air leaks
- Broken lights
- Loose wheel fasteners
- Steering or suspension problems
- Load securement concerns
- Fluid leaks
Finding these issues in the yard is always better than finding them on the highway. A driver who takes the time to inspect their vehicle may prevent hours of downtime on the side of the road. More importantly, they may prevent a collision.
What Happens When You Skip It?
Most drivers don’t intentionally ignore safety defects. The problem is often assuming everything is fine because the truck was working yesterday.
Unfortunately, mechanical parts don’t follow a schedule. A light can fail overnight. A tire can pick up damage from the previous trip. A brake chamber can begin leaking. A wheel seal can suddenly fail.
When defects are discovered during a roadside inspection, the consequences can be significant:

- Inspection violations on the carrier’s safety profile
- Out-of-service orders
- Missed deliveries
- Delayed construction projects
- Lost revenue
- Increased maintenance costs
The best drivers I’ve met all share one habit: they don’t leave safety to chance.
For drivers paid by the mile, waiting for roadside repairs is not how anyone wants to spend their day.
The simple reality is that trip inspections are not just about compliance. They are about protecting your time, your income, and your reputation as a professional driver.
Stay safe out there! Paul

BULK SIGNAGE ORDER FOR SNOW REMOVAL EQUIPMENT
The highway traffic act now requires drivers to keep back 30m from actively working snow removal equipment on roadways that the speed limit is 80km/h or less. That distance increases to 100m back when the speed limit is above 80km/h.
Contractors working for the City of Winnipeg to clear roadways will need to ensure that signage on their equipment is consistent with that messaging. The City of Winnipeg has provided HEAT with the template for the signage that they will be using and HEAT is looking into a bulk order to help members save money and become compliant.
