In 1981 five contractors had an idea to get together to solve problems in the Heavy Equipment Rental with Operator Industry. This included issues related to snow removal within the City of Winnipeg. By 1982 the Heavy Equipment Rental Association of Manitoba (HERAM) had been founded. This Association dealt with concerns regarding government agencies - Municipal and Provincial, as well as with larger size contractors in the hiring of heavy equipment within Manitoba.
HERAM worked closely with these sources in areas of snow removal, and equipment rentals. They worked hard to keep government agencies from purchasing equipment, instead utilizing equipment supplied by independent contractors throughout Winnipeg and Manitoba. HERAM worked with a goal to get fair equipment rates and working conditions for all members.
In 2004, The Independent Dump Truck Association of Manitoba decided, due to lack of membership and volunteers, to negotiate an amalgamation with HERAM. HERAM absorbed members and assets of IDTA in an effort to continue the Dump Truck Associations benefits to its members, and extend to the members of HERAM, while utilizing the infrastructure of HERAM to ensure continued representation to both memberships. Upon amalgamating in 2005, The Heavy Equipment and Aggregate Truckers Association Inc. (HEAT INC.) was formed. Since then, HEAT has represented both memberships as one, and continues to work with both end dump owners and heavy equipment owners alike. HEAT continues to deal with concerns relating to snow removal within the City of Winnipeg as well as being a liaison between members and governing bodies for tendering processes and bid opportunities.
