President’s Message

I would like to thank the Board of Directors for their confidence in me as the incoming  President of H.E.A.T. for the next 2 years. Our Board has an amazing diversity of representation from our industry and has moved our Association into a new era of informing members like never-before. We are committed to helping owners and managers understand the vast changes within our industry. This Board of Directors has over 100 years of industry experience and I plan to use that knowledge as your president to see that we do more for our members than ever before and are constantly striving to reach the next level.

This last year at HEAT has been extremely exciting, starting with the move to our office on Kapelus Drive. It’s location alongside the North Perimeter in West St Paul has great visibility and is convenient for many of our members as they drive past daily. Our new facility is larger, with the ability to provide future training courses that we hope to outline to you soon. It also gave us additional office space which was much needed as we added to our staff.

In 2018 we were also able to launch the City of Winnipeg Snow Orientation Course online for our members. This was our largest accomplishment to date and members of the board are so pleased with the results. Our members that are involved in snow clearing with the City of Winnipeg have seen on both sides, the value of knowing what is expected, and how to do it better. It is important for the public to see consistency with operators and plowing efforts. This orientation shows industry commitment to making snowing clearing on our streets more effective and safer. I would like to thank Shannon Hiebert and Kerry Minsky for the countless time and efforts putting this together.

Another exciting item that has been happening is the Breakfast forums put on by BFL Canada Insurance. Our representative from BFL, Michelle Magdic has been committed to going to the membership for the breakfast forum topics and hosting forums that discuss topics such as: Understanding MPI Insurance vehicle plate classifications changes, having open discussions about Motor carrier topics and even meeting with a representative of the Winnipeg Police Department about distracted driving laws and learning and how they affect our companies.  These are just a few of the new directions we are taking HEAT and our members.

As we do each year, our Board has been out on the front lines learning and understanding the financial challenges affecting projects from our three levels of Government -  asking how and where those valuable investment dollars are being spent. Keeping in-mind a balance of maintaining existing infrastructure and building of new infrastructures that makes sense for the future growth of our province.  Heat will continue to advocate for our members pressuring our government partners on the economic advantages of the trickle-down effect it has on a city and communities when the right infrastructure investments are made. If we harness partnerships with the private sector, with complete transparency and accountability on both sides, we can learn and adjust for future projects. Your HEAT Association wants a Manitoba Made Solution using Manitoba companies.

“Wisdom = Knowledge + Experience + Reflection”, if you are stubborn and adhere to what you believe what is right, then you are not open to the idea that you might be wrong. This is something I personally believe in and live by.  I wrote it down years ago and share this with you as I extend an invitation to all members to share your concerns and ideas with our board because we will always be stronger with the wisdom of us all.
